2017 BeCause Charity Shoot & Bowl

The name BeCause is derived from two words: “Be” and “Cause”. They represent the heart message our Society wishes to spread: Be the cause to make a difference in the lives of those who are in need and underprivileged.

In 2015, BeCause successfully organised a Charity Treasure Hunt at Sunway Pyramid to raise funds for two worthy causes. This event attracted more than 500 participants and the amount raised exceeded our target.

For this year 2017, when Sunway Mega Lanes and Galactic Laser in Sunway Pyramid agreed to sponsor the bowling and Laser games for our Charity initiative, we decided to organize our fund raising event with the theme of “Charity Shoot & Bowl”.

Registration for this Event is now open! Click on the poster above to download the Official Registration Form.

The two Charities who will be beneficiaries from the event are:

As in previous year, 100% of the proceeds will be divided between the two charities. Rest assured that every cent of the public’s money will go to the above-named Charities.

BeCause Charity Treasure Hunt 2015 – a roaring success!

“Why did you choose 16th Sept to have the BeCause Charity Treasure Hunt?”

That was a question many asked us before and on that day. The straightforward reply was easy because it coincided with Malaysia Day, a public holiday. A day which all Malaysians celebrate. What better way to do that than by taking part in a charity event with the theme: “Hunt with Fun & Purpose”!

Of course we did not foresee the haze and that there were other parties targeting to do other things that day. Fortunately, 85% of the Charity Treasure Hunt participants braved the haze (many wore masks) and were not perturbed by another incident that was unfolding around the same time. There were some concern and anxiety from our committee. Thoughts of cancelling the Charity Treasure Hunt did pop up briefly but the thought of seeing the event through no matter what was firmer.

A total of 129 teams – totalling 500 plus participants from all walks of life and denominations – turned up at Sunway Pyramid Mall, the venue of the Charity Hunt. According to the principal of Malaysia Hunt Club, this was a record turnout for a Mall Hunt, an unequivocal success!

With great enthusiasm and high spirits running through everyone present, our Organizing Chairman, Dato CN Chan sounded the horn to signal the start of the hunt at exactly 10am. All Hunters set their heels to find their treasure!

The Hunters returned at the end of the 3 hours time limit to submit their answers. Their determination to win showed as no one was disqualified for late submission or committed any breach of the Hunt’s rules.

A drum performance by the children from Bodhi Homecare Cheras kept the boisterous crowd entertained whilst the Hunt organisers checked the participants’ answers and tabulated the scores.

So that was the Fun part.

The meaningful part, the real purpose for BeCause to organize this event was to raise funds for two charities – Bodhi Homecare Cheras and Kajang Caring Home. After Organizing Chairman Dato CN Chan gave thanks to everyone involved especially the participants, BeCause president Mr.V.C.Ngeow on behalf of the BeCause presented mock cheques to the two beneficiaries. Each charity received RM23,000 which represent the full proceeds from the Charity Hunt’s registration fee collections.

More fun followed… Time for lucky draws! Due to overwhelming support from sponsors and friends, a total of 20 gift parcels, ranging from Coach bags to holiday vacations were given out.

This was followed by the presentation of the cash prizes to the three teams who submitted the best scores. Another 7 consolation prizes were also given out in ascending order.

What about those who did not submit enough correct answers to qualify for prizes but had stayed the whole day from 8am to 3pm to keep the event alive? There were no losers on that day. Everyone who registered, were given goodies bags stuffed with quality gifts, even for those who did not turn up.

To quote a smiling lucky draw winner on that day, “It was like Christmas came early!”

Helping, learning, and painting at Kajang Caring Home

Fourteen Help Institute college students wrote to BeCause to help them to fulfil their Study Skills volunteerism assignment.

BeCause was happy to work out an appropriate program of activities for them so that they have a deeper feel for charity work .

The program started on 13th June, with a briefing at BeCause centre to introduce our organization and its objectives. One of our objectives is to empower youths to contribute more to Society and to remove the wrong notion that charity is only about money and belonged to the domain of rich and famous adults.

Kajang Caring Home’s caretaker Wendy Yap had earlier been looking for help to repaint the Home’s two houses.

This opportunity seemed timely and the job was suitable for the Help students as it is working indoor. Our President and wife kindly sponsored all the paint, painting tools and materials needed for the job.

On Saturday, 20th June, the painting effort started at 10am with some invaluable help from an elder from the Home who gave some tips to the students on how to do a professional painting job.

The students put in 5 hrs of solid work! Actually the painting part was easy. The preparation to move, cover and protect the furnitures, beds etc and getting the students to learn quickly how to mix paint and acquire basic painting technique was the challenging part.

The students worked diligently and completed the job ahead of schedule before 3pm. After cleaning up everything and making sure the beds and other furniture were back in their original places, the caretaker only had praises for them. We could see happy faces amongst the Home’s inmates.

What a wonderful and meaningful way for youths to spend a Saturday in this way!

How you can help Bodhi Homecare Cheras

We visited Bodhi Homecare Cheras in March 2015, this is a follow-up post to provide the public with more information on this Buddhist monk’s legacy.

Bodhi Homecare Cheras is a registered home, set up in 1989 to house and take care of handicapped and abandoned children (presently aged 8 onwards) as well as needy and some disabled old folks forsaken by their families. In total there are about 40 inmates.

Although this home has its beginnings as a temple founded by a Chinese monk from China, it is now run by full-time lay members. The committee is a small group comprising of :-
1) Mr Jims Shee – Chairman
2) Ms Ng Ching Yuet – Treasurer
3) Ms Chua Ching Le – Secretary

The committee members stay in the homecare to give the inmates their fullest attention and care.

This humble homecare is situated on state land. Sometime back, the living quarters caught fire and were destroyed. This unlucky incident was followed by the Government reclaiming land to build a highway. As such, there is no space to rebuild proper living quarters at this point in time.

Some members of BeCause have made several visits to observe the inmates, caregivers and the overall environment. There are no frills and wasteful spending. Indeed, the home is run on very frugal guidelines. For the daily meals, vegetables are sometimes donated to the home after the market in the vicinity closes. Some meat is bought and the abled inmates help the caregivers to cook wholesome meals. We see healthy and happy children and old folks who are well cared for.

As the Bodhi Homecare is an NGO, the committee runs a small recycling station of donated items like clothes, plastic ware, newspapers etc for sale. This contributes to about 50% of their expenses which include living, medicare and schooling expenses for the inmates. Otherwise, they thrive on the occasional donations from the public.

Despite this, Bodhi Homecare provides free medical services and traditional herbal medicine to the needy public as they have a TCM doctor who comes on Sundays to donate his service. In addition, they give out bags of rice and food stuffs donated to them by the public to the more needy who comes a calling. Bodhi Homecare also maintains a station for about 50 abandoned and sick dogs left at their doorstep. The centre also provides free tuition and a kindergarten for poor children from the public.

Bodhi Homecare has an urgent need to accomplish their list of priorities:-

1) The members are presently accumulating funds to erect a stupa to house the statue of Kuan Yin who is seated in the main temple hall. They will then convert the hall to be sleeping quarters where all the inmates sleep on mattresses on the floor.

2) A wall and front gate are currently being built to encompass the centre. This will serve to protect the inmates from intruders and also to prevent flooding of the centre. Incidentally the centre is located below the road and water with garbage from the nearby market are always flowing into the premise.

3) The building of fish pond is in progress for the release of lives (in this case, fishes). A pond for releasing tortoise is already in existence.

4) The centre hopes to relocate 2 Tenaga posts to make more space to build the stupa and provide parking area for visitors.

5) The centre also aspires to relocate the huge dustbins of the wet market located nearby as the stench and flies are unhealthy for the inmates.

6) The centre has finally completed building a proper kitchen.

BeCause believes this home is deserving of our aid as we can see the sincerity and earnestness of the caregivers to love and care for these unfortunate inmates. We are blessed to be able to provide assistance for them.

To this end, BeCause is in the midst of organising something fun and challenging in September 2015 to help Bodhi Homecare. Stay tuned for more details!

Rumah Caring Kajang Needs Your Help!

We first visited Rumah Caring Kajang in January 2012, and had kept in touch with Wendy Yap the caretaker since then. We were made aware during that visit that the neighbours staying nearby were not happy with the operations of Rumah Caring Kajang, which caused difficulties in renewing their MBKJ license. It seems that things have come to a head, as we received recent news that Rumah Caring Kajang is now facing problems associated with having to relocate to another place.

BeCause Secretary Patrick Chan, his wife Viviene and new member Julia together with her group of charity minded friends visited the home on 10 May 2015 to bring the good news to Wendy. The group also brought food and other items needed by the Home. One of the group members who had healing skills also gave free massage to the old folks who thoroughly appreciated the pain relief session.

Wendy updated the group on the current status of their plight. A kindhearted soul had offered a piece of land in Sg Tangkas, Bangi at a discounted price, but the land and the building costs would still come up to about RM1.5 million. Application had been made to Majlis Perbandaran Kajang sometime ago to convert the land to “kebajikan” status, but it is still pending to-date.

The home had been served eviction notices by the local council since 4 years ago. After numerous appeals, the final notice was to move out by end of this year. This posed a real concern for Wendy as she does not have the financial resources nor capacity to have the buildings up without help of sponsors and public donation. She added that she can close the Home but no one could provide an answer as to how to look after the Home’s 50 residents.

Visitors to Caring Home will notice that the home is well kept and clean with lots of flowers and fruits in the garden to make the surroundings pleasant.

All the old folks seemed contented and happy there. Wendy keeps them active and feeling useful by arranging motivational talks and giving them simple household assignments to do so that they stay mentally healthy and feel a sense of belonging within a large family. It is very inspirational to know that she managed to achieve this despite also being involved in helping about 100 single mothers and their children by providing education and whatever resources she had in hand at the Home.

BeCause hope that kind hearted folks would join hands to help Wendy to build Caring Home a new building so that she can continue the good work she is doing to benefit many more who need such care and a home.

To this end, BeCause will be organizing something exciting September 2015 to help Rumah Caring Kajang. Stay tuned for more details!

Walk for Health with NASAM

BeCause team comprising members, friends, as well as staff from Holiday Travel & Tours Sports Club make up a group of about 50, participated in the Nasam Walk for Health on 19th October 2014. At Lake Titiwangsa. This event by Nasam was to create awareness amongst participants about stroke, the most common causes and the avenue available for rehabilitation.

As it was a Sunday, many individuals, teams, strokees, family members, helpers and assistants turned up for the walk. After registration, the walk was flagged off about 7.45am by Janet Yeo, the founder of Nasam. Though some strokees were in wheel chairs, it was heartening to see some other strokees putting every effort to walk on their own to complete their round. The outing went smoothly as the weather was good and the walk was at an easy pace. The full walk was  3 rounds around the lake in Taman Titiwangsa. Most participants were able to complete the rounds. The walk ended at about 9.30am. Participants were treated to free Milo drinks and cereals at the Nestle mobile kiosks thanks to kind sponsors. Some had their breakfast of nasi lemak and coffees. Later, prizes were awarded for the best hats competition. The event was a success and most importantly, everyone enjoyed themselves.

A vote of thanks to NASAM for organizing and inviting us. By taking part, Because members and friends are happy to have made a difference in the life of others and especially in the welfare of Stroke patients and their families.

Visit to Klang Utama Caring Home

Sometime in August this year, one of our Because members informed us that a Home for 41 abandoned children had been burnt down and there was an SOS call.

Our secretary immediately got in touch with the home’s caretakers to find out first hand what help to give. They urgently needed money, foodstuffs such as milk, milo, rice, cooking gas, oil, crockery, cupboards to store dishes, children clothes, computers etc.

Our members spread the news to friends, relatives, colleagues and those whom we thought could provide, especially items which we were unable to procure within our own small Because family.

On 13th September ,when we had the items ready, a group of 7 of us drove to Klang to deliver the goodies. On arrival we were greeted by the Home’s administrator Ms Maha. We received a short briefing by her on what had happened followed by a short walk to the burnt down house which used to be the Home’s boys wing. The fire started due to an electrical fault. Fortunately no one was hurt.

At the time of our visit, most of the children were attending school. Our members distributed some cakes for the smaller kids at the home. We felt good to know, thanks to kind sponsors and kindhearted folks who responded quickly, the short term needs had been taken care of. However there is more we can do to ensure the Home’s long term sustainability and children’s welfare. If all the needies and charities in this world can achieve that, we believe that would be a really great reason to feel good !

Before we left, we assured Ms Maha we will continue to look into ways to make the children happy. We also requested Miss Maha to provide us with proper accounts of the Home’s expenses to make it easier for us to secure funding.

Invitation to Visit the Alzheimer Disease Foundation Malaysia (ADFM)

On 4th September 2014, BeCause members attended ADFM’s Open Day upon an invitation by President Dato Jeffery Ng. It was a busy day at the day care centre. About 100 guests and sponsors turned up. The centre provides activities and social interaction for those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Our members were touched by them as they and their families turned up to take part in the day’s singing event. What is something we take for granted requires monumental effort by those who have lost their memory and power of recall. The centre also have programs conducted by qualified staff aimed at improving memory or to prevent it from worsening.

ADFM is now embarking on a fund raising drive to build a bigger day care centre in old town PJ Section One. The existing centre in Section 22 ,PJ will be converted into a home for those whose families cannot look after them.

Before leaving, BeCause members did their part by donating some money towards ADFM’s new centre plans.

We did it – 240,000 meals by 600 volunteers in 6 hours!

Barely 10 days after the Sunway-sponsored Stop Hunger Now (“SHN”) 40,000 meals packing event, on 28th June, BeCause members joined hands again with SHN, this time along with OCBC and Rotary Club of Georgetown and Pudu to pack 240,000 meals in 6 hours.

While the main event was not short of volunteers, the response was not so good for the preparation works and setting up which had to be done the night before to ensure all was ready by the next morning. Work could only proceed after 10 pm when the shops at Sunway Pyramid had closed. BeCause members responded to the call and 8 members joined with about a dozen other volunteers to work through the night.

After catching a few hours sleep, all woke up early to make it to the main event the following day to ensure its success. Salute to all these volunteers who were there when help was needed most!

The main event was a riot of colors and noise as people from all walks of life came to join the packing lines. All in all about 600 volunteers of all ages including families took part. From the smiles on their faces, one could see it was jolly good fun! Most of our BeCause members became marshals/ supervisors due to having prior experience. One of our committee members had signed up to become a Stop Hunger Now ‘Chef’. Excellent initiative!

Was the event a success? The pictures here say it all!

NASAM Food and Fun Fair 2014 and more to come!

The eagerly awaited day –  National Stroke Association Malaysia’s (NASAM) 17th annual food fair finally arrived on  15th June 2014 held at the playground next to Taman Jaya.

BeCause members came out in full force to man the BeCause food store, provide manpower for other stalls  and also the Sunway sponsored petting zoo. The objective was to raise about RM200,000 for the NASAM branches in PJ and  Ampang as well as for part its annual HQ operation costs .

NASAM’s food fair is quite well known by now – not only for helping to raise funds for a worthy cause – providing subsidized physiotherapy and rehabilitation for stroke patients;  but also for its great variety of stalls and creative ideas /effort put in to make the whole event fun filled , opportunity to grab great bargains and for the family to try out its many food and eating stalls.

NASAM1 NASAM2 NASAM3 NASAM5 NASAM6 NASAM8 NASAM9

Following an earlier visit to NASAM’s main administration centre and understanding some of the problems faced by NASAM’s founder Janet Yeo, BeCause committee had decided that it can do more to support NASAM’s cause especially in the area of public awareness.

To this end, a high profile event to promote NASAM will be organized by BeCause at Sunway Pyramid around Christmas time this to launch NASAM’s Give Up A Meal (GUM) campaign, which is a practical way to ensure the NASAM will receive a steady stream of funds from donors to enable it to run all its centres smoothly.

BeCause, NASAM, and Sunway together will make a difference for strokees to ensure they can continue to rely on NASAM’s charity for their long road to rehabilitation.
