2017 BeCause Charity Shoot & Bowl

The name BeCause is derived from two words: “Be” and “Cause”. They represent the heart message our Society wishes to spread: Be the cause to make a difference in the lives of those who are in need and underprivileged.

In 2015, BeCause successfully organised a Charity Treasure Hunt at Sunway Pyramid to raise funds for two worthy causes. This event attracted more than 500 participants and the amount raised exceeded our target.

For this year 2017, when Sunway Mega Lanes and Galactic Laser in Sunway Pyramid agreed to sponsor the bowling and Laser games for our Charity initiative, we decided to organize our fund raising event with the theme of “Charity Shoot & Bowl”.

Registration for this Event is now open! Click on the poster above to download the Official Registration Form.

The two Charities who will be beneficiaries from the event are:

As in previous year, 100% of the proceeds will be divided between the two charities. Rest assured that every cent of the public’s money will go to the above-named Charities.

Bringing Joy and Cheer to Children for the Sultan of Selangor’s Birthday

In celebration with HRH the Sultan of Selangor’s birthday, BeCause was requested by the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation to invite orphans, underprivileged and abandoned children to the TrickStars – Masters of Trickery show held at Sunway Lagoon on Thursday, 10th Dec 2015

BeCause members had connected and helped with a few children’s homes in the past years and were happy that the following responded positively to our invitation:

The invitees totaled 243 pax.

Buses and vans were chartered by Sunway to transport the children and caretakers to and from their homes. BeCause members were on hand to render assistance to ensure the children were ushered to the show arena at the Sunway Lagoon on time and safely.

Needless to say, for many of the children this was the first time they were given VIP treatment. Sunway CSR staff were also on hand to distribute gifts and other goodies to the children to add to their enjoyment for the evening.

The faces and enthusiasm of the children and caretakers said it all.

BeCause volunteers slept with a smile when they received SMS thumbs up and smileys from all the 4 homes after the show and the party ended around 9.30pm and duly transported safely back to their centres/ homes.

This event capped our Society’s activities for the year 2015. The Committee looks forward to creating more causes to make a difference in the year 2016.

BeCause Charity Treasure Hunt 2015 – a roaring success!

“Why did you choose 16th Sept to have the BeCause Charity Treasure Hunt?”

That was a question many asked us before and on that day. The straightforward reply was easy because it coincided with Malaysia Day, a public holiday. A day which all Malaysians celebrate. What better way to do that than by taking part in a charity event with the theme: “Hunt with Fun & Purpose”!

Of course we did not foresee the haze and that there were other parties targeting to do other things that day. Fortunately, 85% of the Charity Treasure Hunt participants braved the haze (many wore masks) and were not perturbed by another incident that was unfolding around the same time. There were some concern and anxiety from our committee. Thoughts of cancelling the Charity Treasure Hunt did pop up briefly but the thought of seeing the event through no matter what was firmer.

A total of 129 teams – totalling 500 plus participants from all walks of life and denominations – turned up at Sunway Pyramid Mall, the venue of the Charity Hunt. According to the principal of Malaysia Hunt Club, this was a record turnout for a Mall Hunt, an unequivocal success!

With great enthusiasm and high spirits running through everyone present, our Organizing Chairman, Dato CN Chan sounded the horn to signal the start of the hunt at exactly 10am. All Hunters set their heels to find their treasure!

The Hunters returned at the end of the 3 hours time limit to submit their answers. Their determination to win showed as no one was disqualified for late submission or committed any breach of the Hunt’s rules.

A drum performance by the children from Bodhi Homecare Cheras kept the boisterous crowd entertained whilst the Hunt organisers checked the participants’ answers and tabulated the scores.

So that was the Fun part.

The meaningful part, the real purpose for BeCause to organize this event was to raise funds for two charities – Bodhi Homecare Cheras and Kajang Caring Home. After Organizing Chairman Dato CN Chan gave thanks to everyone involved especially the participants, BeCause president Mr.V.C.Ngeow on behalf of the BeCause presented mock cheques to the two beneficiaries. Each charity received RM23,000 which represent the full proceeds from the Charity Hunt’s registration fee collections.

More fun followed… Time for lucky draws! Due to overwhelming support from sponsors and friends, a total of 20 gift parcels, ranging from Coach bags to holiday vacations were given out.

This was followed by the presentation of the cash prizes to the three teams who submitted the best scores. Another 7 consolation prizes were also given out in ascending order.

What about those who did not submit enough correct answers to qualify for prizes but had stayed the whole day from 8am to 3pm to keep the event alive? There were no losers on that day. Everyone who registered, were given goodies bags stuffed with quality gifts, even for those who did not turn up.

To quote a smiling lucky draw winner on that day, “It was like Christmas came early!”

2015 BeCause Charity Hunt!

The name BeCause is derived from two words “Be” and “Cause”. They represent the heart message our Society wishes to spread : Be the cause to make a difference in the lives of those who are in need and underprivileged.

Our philosophy is that one can always help in his/her own capacity – be it money, gifts , effort or time. In this way , charity work can be transformed into enriching joyful experiences rather than something we do as an obligation. This, we believe, will help promote the spirit of collective responsibility so that everyone can take part.

BeCause principally supports and promotes worthy causes and NGOs who are in the same help category. Hence, there are no barriers for us when it comes to helping those in need.

On 16th September 2015, BeCause will be organizing a Charity Hunt at Sunway Pyramid to raise funds for two worthy causes:

1.Bodhi Homecare, Cheras

Building new accommodation quarters for the 30 odd orphans and abandoned children. Their living quarters were burnt down by intruders in 2014.

2. Rumah Caring Kajang

Building a new Home on a piece of land which the Home had been offered at a discounted price after eviction notice was served on them to leave by end of 2015 by the local authority.

The theme of this event is ‘Hunt with fun and purpose’.

100 % of the proceeds from the participation fees collection will be given to the two charities in equal share. We want every cent of public’s money to go to the named Charities.

NASAM 2015 Food & Fun Fair

This year’s NASAM 2015 Food & Fun Fair on 14th June started off on a rainy morning. Despite some delay in the setting up of the stalls due to the wet conditions and soggy ground, the crowd started coming in as early as 8am.

BeCause members/volunteers were busy at their stalls which also included the portable Petting Zoo (courtesy of Sunway Lagoon).

This year, as a regular activity, BeCause sponsored about 20 orphans and neglected kids from Bodhi Homecare, Cheras to have a fun day at the Fair. The boisterous group attracted a lot of attention and in particular the Lions Club (K.L.) who had set up a food stall and invited the orphans over to have free meals and a group photo taken. Hopefully this encounter will result in a better tomorrow and future for the orphanage.

Because members truly showed the right attitude in engaging in charity work and volunteerism with their spirited and joyful effort. We shall let the photos here speak for themselves!

Ending the year with New Hope Rumah Safiyyah and Lumi Air

29th of November 2014 marked the last charity event for BeCause. Our committee capped the year by organizing a trip for 36 orphans and abandoned children to watch a stage performance ‘Lumi Air’ at Sunway Lagoon & Resort. The children were all from New Hope Rumah Safiyyah. To ensure it was a fun filled outing for them, goodie bags and meals were also provided for them.

Earlier in the week, BeCause members led by committee member David Loh visited Rumah Safiyyah at Klang to deliver the gifts of stationary sets, snacks, note pads and pens. The centre’s caretakers who will be taking charge of the orphans on the day of the outing also received gifts. The children and caretakers expressed their excitement and were looking forward to the event because they had never been treated to live shows or musicals before.

During the visit, members took the opportunity to interact with the kids. Puan Mia, the founder of Rumah Safiyyah, secretary Cik Siti Khawia and social services executive Cik Nurazah were also on hand to give us a briefing on the home’s activities and operations.

On the day of the Lumi Air show, to ensure safety and ease of coordinating the group, BeCause chartered a bus to transport the children and caretakers to and from Sunway Lagoon rather than getting friends to fetch them in their cars.

The children from the home were well behaved and everything went as planned. At 7pm sharp with the help of our Vice President, Mr. Kevin Tan, the kids were taken to the Sunway Lagoon Amphitheater in an orderly fashion.

During the show’s intermission, hotdogs and drinks were served to the kids by the most helpful staff of Sunway Lagoon.

When the show ended at 10.00pm,  the children and supervisors all left with filled stomachs and happy faces. What made the day for BeCause members was when some kids asked when will we take them to shows like this again!

The outing went without a glitch and enjoyed by all. Our sincere thanks to the Sunway Group for their kind generosity to support our cause .

What a meaningful event to cap the year before we usher in the new year.

Because will endeavour to fill 2015 with even more charitable events in our joyful efforts to make a difference in the lives of needy folks!

Walk for Health with NASAM

BeCause team comprising members, friends, as well as staff from Holiday Travel & Tours Sports Club make up a group of about 50, participated in the Nasam Walk for Health on 19th October 2014. At Lake Titiwangsa. This event by Nasam was to create awareness amongst participants about stroke, the most common causes and the avenue available for rehabilitation.

As it was a Sunday, many individuals, teams, strokees, family members, helpers and assistants turned up for the walk. After registration, the walk was flagged off about 7.45am by Janet Yeo, the founder of Nasam. Though some strokees were in wheel chairs, it was heartening to see some other strokees putting every effort to walk on their own to complete their round. The outing went smoothly as the weather was good and the walk was at an easy pace. The full walk was  3 rounds around the lake in Taman Titiwangsa. Most participants were able to complete the rounds. The walk ended at about 9.30am. Participants were treated to free Milo drinks and cereals at the Nestle mobile kiosks thanks to kind sponsors. Some had their breakfast of nasi lemak and coffees. Later, prizes were awarded for the best hats competition. The event was a success and most importantly, everyone enjoyed themselves.

A vote of thanks to NASAM for organizing and inviting us. By taking part, Because members and friends are happy to have made a difference in the life of others and especially in the welfare of Stroke patients and their families.

Invitation to Visit the Alzheimer Disease Foundation Malaysia (ADFM)

On 4th September 2014, BeCause members attended ADFM’s Open Day upon an invitation by President Dato Jeffery Ng. It was a busy day at the day care centre. About 100 guests and sponsors turned up. The centre provides activities and social interaction for those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Our members were touched by them as they and their families turned up to take part in the day’s singing event. What is something we take for granted requires monumental effort by those who have lost their memory and power of recall. The centre also have programs conducted by qualified staff aimed at improving memory or to prevent it from worsening.

ADFM is now embarking on a fund raising drive to build a bigger day care centre in old town PJ Section One. The existing centre in Section 22 ,PJ will be converted into a home for those whose families cannot look after them.

Before leaving, BeCause members did their part by donating some money towards ADFM’s new centre plans.

We did it – 240,000 meals by 600 volunteers in 6 hours!

Barely 10 days after the Sunway-sponsored Stop Hunger Now (“SHN”) 40,000 meals packing event, on 28th June, BeCause members joined hands again with SHN, this time along with OCBC and Rotary Club of Georgetown and Pudu to pack 240,000 meals in 6 hours.

While the main event was not short of volunteers, the response was not so good for the preparation works and setting up which had to be done the night before to ensure all was ready by the next morning. Work could only proceed after 10 pm when the shops at Sunway Pyramid had closed. BeCause members responded to the call and 8 members joined with about a dozen other volunteers to work through the night.

After catching a few hours sleep, all woke up early to make it to the main event the following day to ensure its success. Salute to all these volunteers who were there when help was needed most!

The main event was a riot of colors and noise as people from all walks of life came to join the packing lines. All in all about 600 volunteers of all ages including families took part. From the smiles on their faces, one could see it was jolly good fun! Most of our BeCause members became marshals/ supervisors due to having prior experience. One of our committee members had signed up to become a Stop Hunger Now ‘Chef’. Excellent initiative!

Was the event a success? The pictures here say it all!
